Top Reasons Your AC Isn’t Cooling—and What to Do About It
It’s June in Brevard County, and the Florida heat is relentless. If your air conditioner is running but your house still feels warm, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to sweat it out. At Air Gagers A/C & Heating, Inc., we see this issue every summer, and in many cases, it’s an easy fix.
Here’s what to check if your AC seems to be running, but isn’t cooling your home effectively:
1. Your Air Filter Might Be Clogged
A dirty or clogged filter restricts airflow, making it harder for your AC to push out cool air. This is one of the most common causes of poor cooling performance—and luckily, it’s an easy fix.
Pro tip: Replace your filter every 30–60 days, especially during peak cooling months.
2. Thermostat Settings Could Be Off
Make sure your thermostat is set to “Cool” and not just “Fan.” The fan setting will circulate air, but won’t actually trigger the cooling cycle.

3. Low Refrigerant Levels
If your system is low on refrigerant, it can’t effectively absorb and remove heat from your home. You might hear a hissing sound, see ice buildup on the outdoor unit, or notice that the air feels lukewarm.
This requires a professional HVAC technician—don’t try to refill refrigerant yourself.
4. Dirty Coils Are Blocking Heat Transfer
Over time, your evaporator and condenser coils collect dust and grime, especially in Florida’s humid climate. When this happens, your system struggles to cool efficiently.
A routine maintenance visit can clean the coils and restore performance.
5. Blocked or Leaky Ducts
Leaky ductwork can pull in hot attic air or lose cool air before it ever reaches your living space. If certain rooms are warmer than others, or your vents are blowing weakly, duct issues may be to blame.
6. Your System May Be Oversized or Undersized
If your HVAC system isn’t properly sized for your home, it might short-cycle or run constantly without effectively cooling. This can also lead to humidity problems and wear and tear.
Air Gagers can perform a load calculation to determine if your system is the right fit.
