Understanding Heat Pump Behavior in Florida’s Winter Months
It’s January in Brevard County, and even though we’re in Florida, those chilly mornings have many of us switching from cooling to heating mode. If your system starts blowing cold air instead of warming your home, it can be frustrating—and might be a sign you need a heat pump repair.
At Air Gagers A/C & Heating, Inc., we hear this question every winter. Here’s what might be going on, and when it’s time to call in the pros.
First, Know This: Heat Pumps Work Differently Than Furnaces
Unlike traditional furnaces that blow hot air, heat pumps transfer heat from outside—even when it’s cold out—and bring it indoors. This means the air coming from your vents may feel cooler to the touch than what you’re used to, even though it’s warming your home gradually.
If the air is in the 85–95°F range, it may still be doing its job. But if your system is running constantly and your space still feels cold, read on.
5 Common Reasons Your Heater Might Be Blowing Cold Air
It’s in Defrost Mode
On colder mornings, your outdoor unit might freeze over. When this happens, your heat pump briefly switches to cooling mode to melt ice off the coils. During this defrost cycle, your system may blow cold air for a few minutes.
What to do: Wait 5–10 minutes. If warm air returns, your system is working properly. The Thermostat Is Set Incorrectly
It sounds basic, but it happens! Your system may be set to “Cool,” “Emergency Heat,” or “Auto” in a way that’s causing confusion.
What to do: Make sure your thermostat is set to “Heat” and not “Auto” or “Cool.” Set the fan to “Auto,” not “On,” so it only runs when the system is actively heating.Dirty Air Filters or Coils
Restricted airflow due to clogged filters or dirty evaporator coils can cause your system to struggle—leading to longer cycles and cooler air blowing from the vents.
What to do: Replace your air filter if it’s dirty and schedule a professional maintenance visit to clean coils and inspect the system.Low Refrigerant Levels
Your heat pump needs refrigerant to absorb and transfer heat. A leak or low level can prevent the system from warming your home properly.
What to do: This is a job for a licensed HVAC technician. At Air Gagers, we’ll locate leaks, recharge the refrigerant, and provide complete heat pump repair to restore performance. There’s a Mechanical or Electrical Problem
If the reversing valve (the part that switches between heating and cooling) is stuck or broken, or if the compressor or sensors aren’t working correctly, your system might not shift into heating mode properly.
What to do: Call us for a heat pump inspection. We’ll run full diagnostics and make the right repair to get your heat back on quickly.
